The “Good” Complex
“A tree is known by its fruit; a man by his deeds. A good deed is never lost; he who sows courtesy reaps friendship, and he who plants kindness gathers love.”
What makes a good person?
What makes a good person is a complex question philosophers have pondered for centuries. There's no single definitive answer but many philosophers the times have pondered over the thought and many cultures and religions share some common ideas
Firstly to answer this question we need to answer what is good and what causes people to be good and do good. And to come to that we can thankfully refer to opinions curated over centuries firstly from philosophers, cultures, and religions.
The definition of good and Plato’s ideology:
The definition of good by the dictionary in the context is That which is morally right; righteousness. A philosopher with much to say about "good" is Plato, a philosopher )who we have talked about and now know) has the ideology:
The Form of the Good: Plato believed in a world of perfect Forms, the essence of things we experience in the physical world. The Form of the Good is the highest of these Forms.
Source of Knowledge and Value: According to Plato, the Form of the Good is the source of all knowledge and value. It's like the sun for the world of Forms, making everything else intelligible and giving them their worth.
Striving for the Good: Humans have a natural impulse to seek the Good. This can manifest in different ways, but it ultimately leads us towards knowledge, virtue, and living a good life.
Even though Plato has provided a comprehensive ideology of what good should be we can delve even deeper into a more precise meaning of good.
Popular ideologies that are rough definitions that grapple with what the concept of good is:
Utilitarianism: This ideology focuses on maximizing overall happiness or well-being. It asks what choices will bring the greatest good for the greatest number of people.
Deontology: This ideology emphasizes duty and moral obligation. It argues that actions are right or wrong based on their inherent nature, regardless of the consequences.
Virtue Ethics: This ideology focuses on developing good character traits, or virtues, such as courage, honesty, and compassion. It believes that acting virtuously leads to a good life.
Multiple methods and ideologies of the meaning of good according to religion:
In Christianity, doing good is about living a life that reflects your love for God and your fellow human beings. It's not just about following a set of rules, but about letting your faith inspire your actions. Here are some key aspects:
Following Jesus' teachings: The Bible, especially the teachings of Jesus in the Gospels, provides a foundation for Christian good works. Helping the poor, forgiving others, and showing love are all emphasized.
Serving others: This can involve volunteering your time or resources to help those in need. It can be something big or small, but it's about putting the needs of others before yourself.
Spreading kindness and compassion: Christians believe in treating others with love and respect, even those they disagree with. This can involve acts of generosity, forgiveness, and understanding.
Promoting justice: Many Christians believe in working for a more just world, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Self-Improvement and Excellence: Muslims strive to do everything to the best of their ability, with sincerity and excellence, and be the best versions of themselves.
